What is the SSB Interview?
The Services Selection Board (SSB) is an organization under the Ministry of Defence that selects candidates for the Indian Armed Forces as commissioned officers. Aspirants are called for the SSB interview through direct entries (like TGC, UES, NCC Special Entry) or by clearing written exams such as CDS, NDA, and AFCAT.
The SSB interview is one of the most crucial stages of selection. To succeed, candidates must pass a rigorous five-day evaluation of their intelligence, physical fitness, leadership qualities, and overall personality. Through professional coaching at our Chandigarh branch, candidates learn to improve decision-making, teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills—the core qualities essential for becoming a future officer.

The 5-Day SSB Interview Procedure
The SSB interview is designed to evaluate candidates on multiple parameters. Eliminations take place on the first and fifth days, making preparation crucial.
Day 1: Screening Test – The First Filter
Day 1 is the elimination round. Almost 60–70% of candidates are screened out here.
| Test | What It Involves | Preparation Tip |
| OIR (Officer Intelligence Rating) | Objective verbal and non-verbal reasoning test (puzzles, analogies, series). Time is highly limited. | Practice reasoning daily. Focus on managing time and speed without losing accuracy. |
| PPDT (Picture Perception & Discussion) | View a blurred picture for 30s, write a story in 4 mins, then participate in a group discussion to build a common narrative. | Use the Situation → Action → Outcome format. Be clear, confident, and contribute constructively to the group consensus. |
Day 2: Psychological Tests
Assessors evaluate your subconscious thought process and values under time pressure. Memorization won’t work—honesty and consistency are key.
| Test | Name | Task | Strategy |
| TAT | Thematic Apperception Test | Write 12 stories based on pictures (including one blank slide) in 4 minutes each. | Write optimistic, action-oriented stories where the hero solves problems logically. |
| WAT | Word Association Test | Form meaningful sentences from 60 consecutive words (15 seconds each). | Keep sentences short, positive, and realistic (e.g., “Failure teaches lessons for future success”). |
| SRT | Situation Reaction Test | Write quick reactions to 60 everyday situations in 30 minutes. | Keep responses practical, lawful, and time-sensitive. |
| SD | Self-Description | Write how parents, teachers, friends, and you perceive your traits and goals. | Gather real feedback from close ones. Keep it authentic and avoid exaggeration. |
Day 3 & 4: GTO Tasks (Group & Outdoor Tests)
The Group Testing Officer (GTO) conducts outdoor activities to evaluate leadership, teamwork, stamina, and practical intelligence.
- Group Discussion (GD) & Planning (GPE): Discuss current affairs and solve a problem map by prioritizing resources.
- Progressive & Half Group Tasks (PGT/HGT): Teams cross obstacles using rules, logic, ropes, and planks.
- Individual Obstacles (IO): 10 physical tasks (rope climbing, balancing, crawling) to test stamina.
- Command Task (CT): Act as a commander, lead helpers, and complete an obstacle.
- Lecturette: Speak for 3 minutes on a chosen topic.
- Final Group Task (FGT): Final teamwork assessment mimicking the PGT.
GTO Tip: Focus on teamwork and safety in outdoor tasks, not just speed. For discussions, be logical, calm, and structured.
Day 5: Conference – The Final Verdict
All assessors sit together to review your overall performance. You will be asked simple questions about your stay, your performance, and your experiences.
Goal: Be natural, polite, self-aware, and consistent.
Smart SSB Preparation Strategy
While self-study is possible, structured coaching gives you the advantage of expert feedback and practical exposure. To maximize your chances, integrate these daily habits:
- Reasoning Practice: Dedicate 20–30 minutes to OIR sets daily.
- Psych Tests: Write 1–2 TAT stories, practice 20 WATs, and solve 10–15 SRTs every day.
- Speaking Drills: Practice your Lecturette and group communication skills.
- Fitness: Build stamina with cardio, push-ups, rope climbing, and flexibility exercises.
- Current Affairs: Read extensively about defense, geopolitics, and social issues.
