Are you dreaming of donning the prestigious uniform and serving the nation as an officer in the Indian Armed Forces? The National Defence Academy (NDA) is the ultimate gateway to this glorious career, and preparing early is the key to success. If you are targeting the NDA 2027 exam, the time to strategize and start your preparation is now!

At Chanakya Career Institute, Chandigarh Branch, we are committed to shaping the future of defense aspirants. To help you kickstart your journey with clarity and confidence, we have put together a comprehensive guide detailing everything you need to know about the NDA 2027 examination.

1. Eligibility Criteria for NDA 2027

Before diving into the books, it is crucial to ensure you meet the strict eligibility standards set by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).

  • Age Limit: Candidates must be between 16.5 and 19.5 years of age at the time of commencement of the course.
  • Educational Qualification:
  • For Army Wing: Pass certificate in Class 12 (10+2 pattern) or equivalent examination from a recognized board.
  • For Air Force and Naval Wings (and 10+2 Cadet Entry Scheme at INA): Class 12 pass with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (PCM). Students currently appearing for their Class 12 board exams are also eligible to apply.
  • Gender & Marital Status: Both male and female candidates can apply. However, all applicants must be unmarried and must remain so until the completion of their training.
  • Physical Standards: Candidates must be medically and physically fit according to the strict guidelines prescribed by the Armed Forces.

2. Understand the NDA Exam Pattern

The NDA exam is conducted offline (pen and paper mode) and consists of two objective-type papers held on the same day. Understanding the weightage will help you allocate your study time effectively.

PaperSubjectTotal MarksDurationNumber of Questions
Paper IMathematics3002.5 Hours120
Paper IIGeneral Ability Test (GAT)6002.5 Hours150
TotalWritten Examination900

Note: There is a negative marking scheme for incorrect answers in both papers.

3. Decoding the NDA Syllabus

A targeted approach to the syllabus is what separates top rankers from the rest.

  • Mathematics (Paper I): This section tests your analytical skills up to the 12th-grade level. Key topics include Algebra, Matrices and Determinants, Trigonometry, Analytical Geometry (2D and 3D), Differential Calculus, Integral Calculus, Vector Algebra, and Statistics & Probability.
  • General Ability Test – GAT (Paper II): The GAT is divided into two parts:
  • Part A (English – 200 Marks): Focuses on grammar, vocabulary, comprehension, and language usage to test your communication skills.
  • Part B (General Knowledge – 400 Marks): This vast section covers Physics, Chemistry, General Science, History & Freedom Movement, Geography, and Current Events.

4. The Selection Process: Your Roadmap to the Academy

Clearing the NDA exam is a multi-stage process designed to select the absolute best:

  1. Written Examination: The first hurdle. You must clear the sectional cut-off for both Maths and GAT, as well as the overall cut-off.
  2. SSB Interview (900 Marks): Candidates who pass the written exam are called for the Services Selection Board (SSB) Interview. This 5-day rigorous process includes Intelligence and Personality Tests, Group Testing Officer (GTO) tasks, Psychological tests, and a Personal Interview.
  3. Medical Examination: Recommended candidates undergo a thorough medical test at military hospitals.
  4. Final Merit List: The final ranking is based on the combined score of the Written Exam (900 marks) and the SSB Interview (900 marks).
